飽和烴：1、2、3、4、5、6、7、8、9、10等烷烴的英文名稱為methane、ethane、propane、butane、pentane、hexhane、heptane、octane、nonane、decane，當其為取代基時均是去掉「e」然後加上「yl」。有用的前綴二、三為di、tri。如果有支鏈則按有機化學知識先找主體，然後排列支鏈的次序並使之代數和最小，最後以取代基的英文首字母次序排列取代基的順序。例如：C-C(C)-C-C(C)-C(C)-C，命名的步驟為，首先確定其主體為己烷hexane；然後取代基均是甲基其位次2,3,5，故2,3,5-triMethanylhenxhane。
不飽和烴：烯烴，其名稱是在烷烴的基礎上變化，「ane」變成「ene」，其餘規則都同烷烴。但是有一點需要注意的是，當含有兩個或則三個雙鍵時，應是adiene、atriene，其主體的最後一個一個字母"e"應該去掉。變成取代基時，是將"ene"變成"enyl".CC=CC=CC,主體為hexene，二烯應為adi，其位次為2,4.全名為2,4-hexadiene。
炔烴，其命名同烯烴。只是將「ene」變成「yne」。
復雜的有機物命名：先找主體，然後找取代基，最後命名。取代基的位置排列應該以首字母的順序排列，然後再依次寫出。當有機物中存在雙鍵、三鍵時，雙鍵做主體，三鍵做取代基。
